Installing Electric-Vehicle Charging Stations

With more focus on reducing emissions, electric vehicle sales have continued to rise. The growing numbers of these electric cars mean there is an equivalent need for commercial EV charging stations.

There are many benefits to installing a commercial electric-vehicle charging station, including attracting new business and retaining tenants and employees. Drivers of these vehicles appreciate the extra convenience that locations with charging stations provide.

Perhaps you’re reading this because you’re thinking about installing an EV charging station on your commercial property. These stations make locations stand out! Our electricians at Axiom Power discuss how to get it done.

Parking Perk: Where to Install an EV Charging Station?

Commercial businesses near central business districts, city centers, malls, and public parking areas are ideal places to install EV charging stations. Electric vehicles charge where they are parked, and drivers appreciate charging stations that allow them to run errands while recharging their batteries.

Electric-vehicle charging stations near restaurants or retail stores also encourage drivers to dine and shop longer so they can get a full charge on their batteries.

Further, many office plazas, multifamily communities, and workplaces also are installing private EV charging stations for tenants and employees to use. EV drivers want to leave their work or apartment with a full charge, so they will look out for businesses with charging amenities for them to use.

What Kind of Commercial Charging Station Should I Install?

Commercial electric-vehicle charging stations are classified by their charging levels (or speeds) and their data communication capabilities.

Common commercial EV charging stations include:

Level I

Level I chargers are the slowest options, with only three or five miles added per hour of charging. EV drivers get a basic Level I cable to plug their EV into a typical 110-volt wall outlet, but often find that this speed is too slow, even for overnight charging.

Level II

Level II EV charging stations offer faster charging and use 208/240V and 30amp electricity to deliver up to 40 miles of range per hour of charging. Level II chargers are the standard EV charging station found at commercial properties.

Level III or DC Fast Charging

Level III chargers have the fastest charging level, they require more energy, are expensive to install, and are not compatible with all electric-vehicle models. A Level III charger can offer anywhere from 35 to 100 miles per hour of charge time.

Smart Charging

With a smart network and data communication capabilities, commercial property owners and managers can restrict access to charging stations to approved members, set custom pricing to help recoup energy costs, download usage reports, and remotely monitor EV station health.

How Much Will It Cost to Install EV Charging Stations?

Several factors affect the cost of installing an electric vehicle charging station. These factors can include:

  • Available electrical service

  • Site location

  • Data connectivity

  • Materials

  • Labor

  • Permits

  • Taxes

If you are in a new building, there may be “stub-outs*” required for your stations, but an older building may require renovations. Our commercial electricians at Axiom Power can help you determine the level of site work that you will need to install EV charging stations.

*A stub-out is an exposed portion of a pipe that is installed during electrical, plumbing, or gas rough-in and is ready for connection to a device or fixture.

Ways to Save on EV Charger Installations

We’re all about the bottom line. There are several ways to mitigate the costs of installing EV charging stations. You can keep the costs more manageable by using the existing electrical infrastructure, taking advantage of rebates and grants, or splitting the costs and responsibilities with adjacent businesses.
